It wouldn't work, most of the time, unless you were within a couple feet. After installing this kit, I can open and close my garage from 200 yds away and more. Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by cbxsteve FORGETS CODES EVERY TIME POWER GOES OUT I have a very old Overhead Door opener that I needed to control with new openers, and I purchased this unit to facilitate that. It worked perfectly for the purpose. It accepts codes from a wide variety of remotes, and has great range. I was very pleased with my purchase.so much so that I threw out the box it came in. Then the power went out for an hour. When it came back on, none of the remotes worked. Upon checking, it appeared that the unit had forgotten all of the programming I did. I called Genie tech support to report the problem expecting to get an RMA for a replacement unit. Instead, I was told that the unit's memory is not non-volatile, and will forget everything upon loss of power! I would return this thing in a second, but I discarded the box, and besides, Home Depot is not responsible for the pitiful design. Unless you want to dedicate a UPS system to run this thing, stay away December 21, 2015

When faced with buying a new garage door opener to replace an ancient (but smoothly running) Overhead Door Model 100, due to the fact that I didn't have a working remote, I was pleasantly surprised with this product. It installed easily with some rudimentary prerequisite skills. It really brought my opener into this century. November 29, 2015

The old door openers still worked fine so I didn't want to replace everything. I tried a less expensive no name brand two door remote and it worked on and off for about a year and a half, loosing the signal more and more often. These are a little more money but wow. I bought two of the Genie universal remote conversion/upgrade units "one for each door" and they work great. The installation is simple and the range of the remote was better than the original. It worked so well, I ended up buying an additional remote for the house and the Genie keypad for the front of the garage. I couldn't be happier and wish I had bought Genie years ago. If your trying to upgrade or resurrect your old door openers, this is the way to go. November 7, 2015

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Ron Garage Door Radio Receiver Upgrade The wireless remotes stopped opening the garage door, yet the door bell button with direct wiring worked okay.. I had the option of installing a new garage door opener for $138 or buying a new radio circuit board for $90. Instead, I found this relatively low cost radio receiver that was compatible with the original wireless remotes. It also included an additional wireless remote for your car's sun visor. Installation: Relatively simple: Power up the unit with the AC adapter (included) and run the output wires to the same screws that connect to the door bell button. You should have some familiarity with wiring. Then you push a red button on the unit to put it into programming mode, and then press the send button on your wireless remote so they sync. Done. Harder: Your ceiling socket needs to have a second position open for the AC adapter. The adapter is heavy and needs to be secured to the light socket with the long screw they include.
